How To Best Protect Your Company From Fires

Posted on: 23 September 2017

As a business owner, you need to make sure that you are doing everything you can in order to protect your company from being destroyed by a fire. Even the smallest of fires that starts in the microwave from an employee trying to make some popcorn, can quickly destroy everything you have worked so hard to achieve. Here are some of the things you need to do:

Fire Extinguishers And Training

Having one fire extinguisher is not enough. You need to have several and you need to make sure that all of your employees know exactly where they are. Not only that, but you should actually hold a fire safety training, which should be mandatory for all of your employees to attend. They will need to learn how to recognize the early signs of a potential fire, such as smoldering, where to locate the fire extinguishers and how to use them correctly, and the best escape route out of the building. Everyone also needs to learn that it is best for them to leave the building than to try to fight a fire that they cannot control. A fire extinguisher should only be used if the fire is very small, such as one inside of a microwave, or if they are trapped and need to clear a path to allow themselves to escape.

Sprinkler Systems

Never make the mistake of trying to avoid the installation of a sprinkler system because of a fear that they would go off accidentally and ruin your business equipment. That is not likely to happen. However, if there is a fire and the sprinkler system is able to put it out, instead of losing absolutely everything, including the building itself, you might just have to replace a few computers and personal items. Hire a company that specializes in the installation and repair of sprinkler systems. This way, not only will they be installed correctly, but you will know who to turn to if you happen to experience any issues that need troubleshooting later down the road.

Alarm System

You need to have plenty of smoke and fire alarms throughout the entire building. The best kind are the ones that are connected to each other. This way, if one detector senses smoke or fire, all of the alarms in the building will sound. Otherwise, there could be an alarm going off in the basement, but no one will know if they are too far away. Also, setting up an alarm system through a company that can monitor them and then call the fire department when needed will help tremendously. After all, the quicker the fire department can arrive, the easier it may be to save your company.
